compensated hardness

A calculated value based upon the total hardness, the magnesium-to-calcium ratio, and the sodium, iron, manganese concentrations in a water. This value is used to correct for the reduction in hardness removal capacity of a cation exchange water softener, which is caused by the presence of these substances. No single method of calculation has been uniformly accepted.
